One radiator cold? Safe checks before you request help

A radiator that is cold, unevenly warm or leaking can have more than one cause. Before you ask for help, note what you can see and what the rest of the property’s heating is doing. That gives a clearer starting point without assuming the radiator, boiler or valve is the cause.

Gas or safety concern: this page is for water-side radiators and heating valves. If you smell gas, suspect a gas leak, or see a damaged gas appliance, leave the situation to the appropriate emergency or Gas Safe professional rather than attempting a repair.

1. Check the pattern, not just one radiator

Note whether one radiator is affected or several, and whether the rest of the heating and hot water are working as usual. A problem limited to one room can need a different assessment from a property-wide heating problem. If the radiator is warm at the bottom but cooler elsewhere, record that pattern rather than trying to diagnose it.

2. Look for signs that change the urgency

Take a clear photograph of the radiator, both valves and the floor or wall around it if this can be done safely. Mention visible water, staining, corrosion, damage, a stuck valve, unusual noises or whether the problem is getting worse. Do not force a seized valve, remove a boiler cover, or work around water near electrical fittings.

3. Use controls only as their instructions allow

Heating controls and thermostatic radiator valves affect how much hot water reaches a radiator. The Energy Saving Trust explains how thermostats, programmers and TRVs work. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your own system; controls differ between boilers, heat pumps and other systems. If you are unsure, avoid changing unfamiliar settings or dismantling fittings.

4. Give a useful description when you enquire

Send the property postcode, whether it is a house, flat or managed building, when the issue began, which rooms are affected and clear photos where safe. For a rented or managed property, include who can arrange access and approve a quotation. Do not send keys, access codes or tenant personal documents in the first message.

5. Confirm the right scope before work is agreed

Fixright’s published service covers water-side radiator and heating-valve enquiries. Access, existing connections, parts and the wider system can affect the next step. Boiler and gas-appliance repair or servicing are outside this public service scope unless separately confirmed with the required evidence. An enquiry does not confirm an appointment.
